Ubisoft today dropped the first trailer for its upcoming game Assassin’s Creed Shadows, formerly Codename: Red. The new game follows Syndicate, in that it features dual protagonists: Stealthy shinobi Naoe and fierce samurai Yasuke. The trailer shows off a little of the game’s story and the historical events that surround it. Assassin’s Creed Shadows launches on November 15, on PC, Mac, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S as well as Amazon Luna and Ubisoft+.

According to the trailer, Shadows takes place in Sengoku-era Japan, where Naoe and Yasuke meet amidst the turbulence of the country’s unification. Yasuke invades Naoe’s remote village in Iga with Oda Nobunaga, at least according to Ubisoft’s follow-up video spotlighting the protagonists. Naoe herself is the daughter of historical ninja Fujibayashi Nagato. Each protagonist has their own story and set of skills. Naoe is the classic Assassin, specializing in stealth and infiltration, while Yasuke has more combat-focused abilities reminiscent of Eivor or Kassandra. Yasuke is based on the real samurai of the same name, which is a first for an Assassin’s Creed protagonist.

The game features open world exploration in feudal Japan, with environments ranging from ports to cities to forests. According to Ubisoft, the game features reactive environments, weather and seasons. Naoe and Yasuke will also be able to build up an information network to help with their missions, as well as recruit allies and customize their hideout.

Ubisoft teased Assassin’s Creed: Codename Red in 2022 at the Ubisoft Forward event. At the time, the only information it offered was that the game took place in feudal Japan. It was announced alongside the other upcoming AC games, Codename: Jade (now simply called Assassin’s Creed Jade) and Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe.
